Lucknow, May 1: On the occasion of Buddha Purnima, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav responded to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s ‘chameleon’ remark during an event at the SP office. He stated that the government changes its stance according to circumstances and is attempting to divert public attention from core issues.
Yadav emphasized that the current times are filled with challenges and that society needs to come together to move forward. He reiterated the commitment to develop major Buddhist sites such as Lumbini, Sarnath, and Kushinagar, highlighting the importance of giving these locations global recognition.
In response to Adityanath’s comments, Yadav remarked that it is actually the ruling party that alters its statements based on the situation. He accused the government of using issues like ‘Nari Vandan’ merely as slogans to distract the public. He asserted that the people of the state have understood the situation and are seeking change.
Regarding the issue of women’s reservation, he noted that it was passed with the consensus of all parties, but the BJP is using it for political gain. He alleged that the government is trying to shift attention from pressing problems by raising this issue. Yadav also questioned the government’s intentions concerning delimitation and amendments, stating that political strategies have long been based on data.
On law and order, he criticized the ‘bulldozer policy’ and demanded a fair investigation into incidents in Hardoi and Varanasi. Additionally, he raised concerns about the smart meter scheme, delays in wheat procurement, changes in labor laws, and repeated amendments to the Ayodhya master plan, putting the government on the defensive.
He accused the government of benefiting select individuals through its policies. The event saw a large participation of Buddhist monks, with the venue resonating with chants of “Buddham Sharanam Gachhami,” as the monks recited teachings of Buddhism. Speakers also shared their views on social justice, women’s empowerment, and the rights of backward classes.
