Guwahati, May 20: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state government is conducting a comprehensive survey of available government land in and around Guwahati to secure it for future development projects, educational institutions, and industrial infrastructure.
During a visit to the Jagiroad assembly constituency, the Chief Minister informed reporters that the government has identified a significant amount of government land in the Dharmatul area and its surroundings, which can be utilized for public purposes in the coming years.
“We are reviewing the available government land in areas like Jagiroad and Dharmatul. Various institutions, industrial estates, educational institutions, and other government facilities can be developed on this land,” he stated.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the government’s top priority is to protect these lands from encroachment and unregulated use. “Steps are being taken to secure government land, especially in the areas surrounding Guwahati. There are about 300 bighas of government land here. I am personally inspecting it today to ensure its safety,” he added.
He clarified that no specific projects have been finalized for this land yet, and the current focus is solely on preservation and strategic planning. “There is no concrete plan for this land at the moment. The main objective is to secure it properly for future needs,” he said.
Officials accompanying the Chief Minister reported that the state government has recently intensified efforts to map and secure government land in several districts, particularly in the rapidly urbanizing areas of Guwahati, where pressure from real estate expansion and encroachment is increasing.
In recent years, the state government has announced several infrastructure and industrial projects to boost economic activities in central Assam and the Guwahati metropolitan area. Jagiroad has emerged as a key area due to its strategic connectivity and proximity to the state capital.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that with the elections now over, he wants to focus on governance and development work rather than political discussions. “The elections are over. I do not wish to talk about politics now,” he concluded.
