Miami, June 7: Javier Sanoja homered and recorded two singles, while Tyler Zuber secured his first career save as the Miami Marlins narrowly defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on Saturday.
Sanoja initiated the scoring in the fifth inning with a 363-foot home run to left field against Shane McClanahan, helping Miami establish a 4-1 lead. However, the Rays made a late-game push in the ninth inning against closer Pete Fairbanks.
Ben Williamson walked to start the inning and scored on a wild pitch by Fairbanks, narrowing the lead to 4-2. Yandy Díaz followed with an RBI single, and the Rays loaded the bases before Zuber came in to strike out Junior Caminero, securing the win for Miami.
The Marlins managed a total of 10 hits, a significant improvement from their two hits in Friday’s loss. Joe Mack contributed with a run-scoring double, while Otto Lopez also had two singles. Díaz was a standout for the Rays, collecting three of their five hits.
In a bullpen game, the Marlins utilized seven pitchers, with Lake Bachar starting and striking out three over three flawless innings. John King earned the win after getting two crucial outs.
Despite the loss, McClanahan, who allowed four runs and eight hits with six strikeouts over five innings, continues to lead the AL East, although the Rays have now lost four of their last five games.
Miami’s pitchers were flawless for the first four innings until a throwing error by Sanoja allowed Richie Palacios to reach base in the fifth. Cedric Mullins was hit by a pitch, but King managed to induce a double play to escape the inning.
Sanoja extended the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single in the sixth, and pinch-hitter Liam Hicks added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. The Rays broke Miami’s combined no-hit bid with a single from Victor Mesa Jr. in the sixth, and Díaz’s RBI double in the eighth prevented a shutout.
