Sydney, December 22 (Udaipur Kiran) – Experienced fast bowler Sean Abbott of Sydney Sixers has shared a major update on his comeback after a hamstring injury. Abbott said the last six weeks had been quite “frustrating,” but he is now progressing well and aiming to return for the Big Bash League (BBL) match on Boxing Day.
The 33-year-old Abbott suffered the hamstring injury in early November during a Sheffield Shield match. This injury ruled him out of the start of the Ashes series, despite being included in Australia’s squad for the first Test. Before the injury, he had taken five wickets for New South Wales against Victoria.
On the same day, senior Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood also suffered a hamstring injury, ending his Ashes campaign. Abbott and Hazlewood have completed rehabilitation together at the SCG and Cricket New South Wales’ Silverwater training base.
Speaking to Fox Cricket after Sydney Sixers’ win against Sydney Thunder in the ‘Sydney Smash,’ Abbott said, “I just need a few more small box ticks and hopefully I can make myself available for selection next week. It has been a frustrating period, but at the elite level, this is part of the game. I hope to be back on the field next week and perform well.”
Sydney Sixers, who started the BBL season with two losses, secured their first win by defeating Sydney Thunder by 47 runs. Their next match is against Melbourne Stars at the SCG on Boxing Day.
Young all-rounder Jack Edwards described Abbott’s return as “very big” for the Sixers. According to Edwards, “He is a treasure of experience and skill. His contributions with bowling, batting, and fielding are crucial. We have missed him, and seeing him back on the field on Boxing Day will be very exciting.”
Abbott is the highest wicket-taking male bowler in Big Bash history with 175 wickets. His strong comeback will not only be important for the Sixers but could also strengthen his claim for the Australian team ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
