Derbyshire, March 8 – English county cricket club Derbyshire has reappointed veteran batsman Wayne Madsen as their captain for the upcoming County Championship season. The 41-year-old takes charge just a month before the season begins, following David Lloyd’s decision to step down as skipper.

This marks Madsen’s second tenure as Derbyshire captain, having previously led the team from 2012 to 2016, during which he guided them to promotion from Division Two in his very first season.
Head Coach Mickey Arthur Backs Madsen’s Leadership
Derbyshire’s head coach, Mickey Arthur, expressed delight over Madsen’s return to captaincy, highlighting his leadership qualities and immense experience.
“Wayne has always been an outstanding leader and is incredibly respected in the dressing room. I’m thrilled that he will lead our squad in 2025. His experience is invaluable—he has already achieved promotion as captain before, and I look forward to seeing the team thrive under his leadership,” Arthur stated in an official club release.
Arthur also emphasized Madsen’s dedication and professionalism, calling him a role model on and off the field.
Derbyshire’s 2024 Struggles and Madsen’s Personal Brilliance
Derbyshire endured a disappointing 2024 season, finishing at the bottom of Division Two. However, Madsen’s individual performances stood out, as he amassed 1,005 runs at an impressive average of 50.25, making him the team’s leading run-scorer.
📌 Madsen’s Career Milestones:
✔ 14,601 first-class runs for Derbyshire – Ninth highest in the club’s history.
✔ 1,000+ runs in a season for the seventh time in 12 years.
✔ Key contributor despite Derbyshire’s struggles in 2024.
Madsen Expresses Pride in Leading Derbyshire Again
Upon being named captain again, Madsen expressed deep pride and gratitude, acknowledging the significance of leading one of England’s historic counties.
“It is a tremendous honor to captain Derbyshire once again. I fully understand what it means to represent this club and its loyal supporters, and I take immense pride in leading this team,” he said.
He also praised outgoing captain David Lloyd, acknowledging his contributions towards building team unity and resilience.
“David did a fantastic job in strengthening the squad’s cohesion and fighting spirit. I intend to build on that foundation and push the team to greater heights,” Madsen added.
