Water Resources Minister Suresh Rawat Inspects Devas Project Sites in Udaipur, Calls for Fast-Tracking Phase III & IV

Udaipur, May 30: Rajasthan’s Water Resources Minister Suresh Rawat conducted a detailed inspection of the Devas Water Project on Friday, focusing particularly on the progress of its third and fourth phases. During his visit to the Nathiyathal village site—proposed for a major dam under Devas Phase III—the Minister instructed officials to expedite preparatory work and begin on-ground construction activities without delay.

Focus on Strategic Water Management

Accompanied by senior engineers and local officials, Minister Rawat reviewed the technical blueprint of the upcoming dam, which will have a catchment area of 79.06 sq km and a storage capacity of 70 MCFt. The proposed dam will also feature an outflow capacity of 1,330 cubic meters per second, critical for flood management and water distribution in the region.

Rawat emphasized that water management remains a top priority for the Rajasthan government, highlighting projects like Ramjal Setu, the Yamuna Water Agreement, and the Devas Project as key efforts to secure long-term water sustainability in the state.

Phase III and IV Expected to Transform Water Supply

The foundation stones for Devas Phase III and IV were laid by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on March 1, 2024. With a projected investment of over ₹1,690 crore, these phases involve constructing two new dams—one near Nathiyathal and another in Ambawa village—along with connecting tunnels. The expanded infrastructure aims to supply approximately 1,000 million cubic feet (MCFt) of water to Udaipur’s major lakes, including Pichola and Fatehsagar, enhancing the city’s drinking water availability and ecological balance.

Dignitaries Present

The site visit was attended by Udaipur Rural MLA Phool Singh Meena, social worker Gajpal Singh, Chief Engineer (Banswara) Ajay Tyagi, Additional Chief Engineer (Udaipur) Virendra Singh Sagar, Superintending Engineer Manoj Jain, Executive Engineer Birbal Dudi, and representatives from DBL and Mega Engineering, the firms overseeing implementation.

Historical Context

The Devas Project is a long-standing initiative aimed at improving water security for Udaipur. Phase I was completed in 1973-74, while Phase II began in 2011, involving the construction of the Akodara Dam. The upcoming phases represent a significant leap forward in capacity and reach.
