Vikings Committed to JJ McCarthy as Starting Quarterback, Not Pursuing Aaron Rodgers: Report

The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly shut down multiple trade inquiries for rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy and are moving forward with him as their franchise QB—for now. Despite ongoing speculation, an NFL Network report on Wednesday confirmed that the Vikings are not currently pursuing Aaron Rodgers and instead plan to pair McCarthy with a veteran quarterback.

Vikings Stand Firm on McCarthy Amid Rodgers Speculation

As the NFL offseason progresses, rumors surrounding four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers have intensified, with teams like the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers emerging as potential landing spots. However, the Vikings have distanced themselves from the Rodgers sweepstakes, signaling that they are fully invested in McCarthy’s development.

The Vikings selected McCarthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, viewing him as a long-term solution at quarterback. Reports indicate that Minnesota has already rejected multiple trade offers for the 22-year-old, underscoring their commitment to his future with the franchise.

McCarthy’s Promise Despite Injury Setback

Before suffering a season-ending meniscus tear in the 2024 preseason, McCarthy displayed promising flashes of his potential. He completed 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions, showcasing his accuracy, poise, and ability to move the ball downfield.

His injury, however, paved the way for Sam Darnold to take over as the team’s starter—a decision that ultimately propelled the Vikings to a 14-3 record and a wild-card playoff berth.

Darnold’s Exit After Disappointing Finish

Despite leading the Vikings to a strong regular season, Darnold’s late-season struggles proved costly.

  • In Week 18, with the NFC North title and No. 1 seed on the line, Darnold delivered a subpar performance against the Detroit Lions, completing 18 of 41 passes for 166 yards in a 31-9 loss.
  • That defeat forced the Vikings into the wild-card round, where they fell 27-9 to the Los Angeles Rams. Darnold finished the game with 245 passing yards, one touchdown, one interception, and nine sacks.

Following his underwhelming playoff showing, the Vikings opted to let Darnold walk in free agency, where he secured a three-year, $100.5 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks to replace Geno Smith.

Vikings’ Plan: Develop McCarthy, Add Veteran Presence

With Darnold out of the picture, the Vikings’ strategy revolves around grooming McCarthy while bringing in an experienced veteran to provide mentorship. Although they have yet to confirm who that veteran will be, the team’s decision to pass on Rodgers suggests they are prioritizing long-term stability over a short-term superstar fix.
