Belfast, June 29: Ireland’s left-arm fast bowler Jay Moondra was named ‘Player of the Match’ and ‘Player of the Series’ in the final T20 match against India. Born in India, Moondra took 2 wickets for 25 runs in the first match of the series and followed it up with 3 wickets for 32 runs in the next game. This victory marks Ireland’s first T20 series win against India, and Jay described his first experience playing international cricket as ‘fantastic.’
During the match on Sunday at the Civil Service Cricket Club, Moondra put India in a tough spot while chasing a target of 155 runs. He dismissed Sanju Samson LBW and also sent Abhishek Sharma and Shreyas Iyer back to the pavilion. With a total of three wickets, Ireland secured a memorable win by just one run.
In the post-match presentation ceremony, Jay expressed, “I am still trying to feel this moment. I know it’s hard to put into words. Playing against top players and testing myself is a wonderful feeling. The plan was to just keep things simple for a long time. The credit goes to the team members and management for keeping things easy. Difficult times will come, but we need to stay calm and focused on our work. I am still trying to understand it.”
Reflecting on his mindset while bowling to Samson, Moondra said, “Just keep things simple, do what you have been doing. It’s going to be tough, there’s little room for error. So just keep doing what you’ve been doing and stick to the plan.”
Talking about the challenges he faced while establishing himself in the team since moving to Ireland in 2021, Moondra remarked, “Well, everyone has ups and downs in life, so you just have to stay determined and keep moving forward. Nothing else.”
He also praised the atmosphere in the Ireland camp, saying, “They made me feel like I am one of them, nothing different. Playing has been fantastic, with a great atmosphere and good people. So I am just doing what they have entrusted me with.”
