Washington, May 5: The United States has initiated a military mission aimed at breaking the alleged blockade of commercial ships by Iran in the Hormuz Strait. This operation involves the deployment of warships and aircraft to ensure the safe passage of vessels through one of the world’s most critical oil routes.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the campaign, named ‘Project Freedom’, was launched under the orders of President Donald Trump, with the goal of “restoring the free flow of trade in the Hormuz Strait.”
Hegseth described the mission as defensive, limited in scope, and temporary, emphasizing that its sole purpose is to protect innocent commercial ships from Iranian aggression. He clarified that US forces would not enter Iranian waters or airspace, stating, “We do not seek conflict, but Iran cannot be allowed to prevent innocent nations and their goods from passing through international maritime routes.”
He accused Tehran of harassing civilian vessels, threatening sailors from various nations, and weaponizing a vital maritime route, which he characterized as a method of international coercion or extortion.
Hegseth noted that two American-flagged commercial vessels have successfully passed through the Hormuz Strait under the protection of US warships, demonstrating that the route remains open. He also mentioned that hundreds of ships worldwide are prepared to transit this path.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General Dan Ken, reported that Iran has threatened and attacked commercial vessels multiple times in the past seven weeks, aiming to disrupt trade and harm the global economy. He highlighted that the Strait handles nearly one-fifth of the world’s total oil consumption, making it crucial for global markets.
According to the Pentagon, over 1,550 commercial ships with more than 22,500 sailors are currently trapped in the region. General Ken revealed that Iran has fired upon commercial vessels nine times since the ceasefire, seized two container ships, and attacked US forces more than ten times, although these incidents have not escalated to full-scale war.
The US has deployed over 15,000 troops, guided missile destroyers, helicopters, and more than 100 aircraft for this mission to create a secure maritime corridor. Hegseth stated that the US has established a protective barrier over this waterway, akin to a red, white, and blue security shield, which safeguards ships around the clock. He warned that any attack would be met with a severe and devastating American response.
He reiterated that the ceasefire is not over and urged Iran to avoid escalating tensions and act sensibly. He also called on US allies to take on this responsibility, as the world relies on this maritime route more than ever.
