Seoul, 29 December. The American military commander stationed in South Korea revealed on Monday the secret behind Seoul’s strategic strength. He claimed that South Korea is not responding to any threats on the Korean Peninsula because the US has requested it to hold back.
General Javier Brunson, Commander of US Forces Korea (USFK), made this statement during a forum on the US-South Korea alliance. He also mentioned the new US National Security Strategy and highlighted efforts to enable Seoul and Tokyo to protect the “First Island Chain.” This chain strengthens the US against China in the Pacific region. The commander did not comment on North Korea.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Brunson said in his address, “The recently released US National Security Strategy document not only highlights the importance of this region but also the significance of Korea itself. It emphasizes the critical role that like-minded partners play in maintaining stability and expectations in the Indo-Pacific.”
He further stated, “In this context, Korea is not only responding to threats on the peninsula. Korea stands at the crossroads of broader regional dynamics shaping the balance of power across Northeast Asia.” Regarding military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, especially after Pyongyang reportedly sent soldiers to support Moscow in the war against Ukraine, Brunson said Pyongyang has taken a “long-term strategic decision.”
Brunson added that North Korea’s deepening military partnership with Russia, including arms exchanges for advanced technology, has dangerously advanced its missile and nuclear programs.
“On the other hand, you see a government that has made a long-term strategic decision and is not playing any temporary bargaining games,” he said.
On 22 December, South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said he would work to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue with North Korea and other related countries. He reiterated the government’s efforts to reconnect with Pyongyang.
During a ceremony organized by the South Korea-US Parliamentarian Union, Cho said it is time to “deeply consider what must be done” to ensure security and peace on the peninsula.
