Udaipur Set to Go Green: Over 1 Lakh Seed Balls to Be Distributed Free on World Environment Day

Udaipur, June 3 — With the growing urgency of tackling global warming and promoting sustainable living, Gramin Madad Kashi Foundation has launched a powerful green initiative in Udaipur. In celebration of World Environment Day on June 5, the foundation will distribute over 1 lakh seed balls free of cost to citizens and eco-volunteers with the aim of transforming Lake City into a Green City.

This large-scale plantation campaign aims to cover Udaipur’s hills and open spaces with native tree species, supporting ecological restoration through community involvement.

A Simple, Effective Way to Green the City

Foundation Director Saroj Patel explained that seed balls are an affordable and efficient way to promote afforestation, especially before the monsoon. Made using a mix of five types of seeds and soil, these seed balls can be easily scattered in open areas like forests, hillsides, empty plots, and even home gardens, and they naturally germinate with rain, needing minimal human intervention.

This year, the foundation is distributing more than double the number of seed balls compared to last year, when 50,000 were handed out. The campaign has already attracted nationwide interest, with people from across India requesting seed balls for personal and institutional plantation drives.

Native Trees Chosen for Shade, Oxygen, and Ayurveda

The seed balls contain seeds of Moringa (Drumstick), Amaltas, Bamboo, Tamarind, and Jungle Jalebi — all native species known for their high oxygen output, shade, and Ayurvedic value. Some, like tamarind and jungle jalebi, also yield edible fruits, making them both eco-friendly and economically beneficial.

According to Foundation President Sandeep Patidar, these trees not only improve air quality but also promote biodiversity. “Our aim is to revive green cover with trees that are resilient, low-maintenance, and offer long-term ecological value,” he said.

How to Get Free Seed Balls

Citizens can receive their free seed balls by contacting the foundation office located in Saheli Nagar, Udaipur, or by sending their name, address, and the desired number of seed balls via WhatsApp to 9610256904 by June 4. The service is completely free for individuals. Organizations can also place bulk orders through the same number and will receive seed balls at subsidized rates.

The Rajasthan Pollution Control Board has already procured 20,000 seed balls through the foundation to support the campaign.

Easy to Use, Effective Results

Foundation member Dr. Digvijay Singh noted that these seed balls can simply be scattered in any open space — such as public gardens, trekking paths, or barren land. Once the monsoon rains begin, the balls dissolve into the soil, allowing seeds to sprout naturally. With favorable conditions, a germination success rate of 40–50% can be expected.

“These seed balls don’t need regular watering or care. They’re made for self-sufficient growth, making them ideal for large-scale reforestation,” Singh added.

25,000 Seed Balls Ready, Demand Rising

Currently, 25,000 seed balls have already been prepared, with 10,000 already booked. The production team — consisting of 10 dedicated workers — has been working for over two weeks to meet the demand, sourcing seeds from local forests and suppliers in Lucknow.

As the campaign gains momentum on social media, the foundation hopes to make tree planting a mass movement — bringing together citizens, nature lovers, and institutions in a shared mission to create a cleaner, greener future for Udaipur.
