On June 4, the NEET UG 2024 results were unveiled. On June 23, a re-examination for 1,563 candidates is scheduled. Post the final results, from July 6 onwards, the counseling process for admissions into MBBS, BDS, and other medical courses will commence. Today, we shall delve into the premier colleges in three states – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh – based on the NIRF rankings.
Rajasthan’s Top Medical Colleges Among the Nation’s Elite
According to the 2023 rankings, two medical colleges in Rajasthan feature in the list of the top 50 medical colleges nationwide. AIIMS Jodhpur stands at the 13th position nationally and first in the state, followed by Sawai Man Singh Medical College in Jaipur, ranking 46th nationally and second in the state.
1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhpur
AIIMS Jodhpur holds the premier position among Rajasthan’s medical institutions. Admission to its MBBS program necessitates qualifying the NEET UG exam post-12th, conducted by the NTA. The Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) handles counseling based on merit lists and cut-off scores.
Besides MBBS, AIIMS Jodhpur offers postgraduate courses, including MD Hospital Management, super-specialization, fellowship programs, and PhD courses. This year, the institution also launched MPH (Master of Public Health) and executive programs in public health policy, leadership, and management. Eligible candidates include those with medical backgrounds like MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and non-medical backgrounds like nursing, veterinary sciences, physiotherapy, pharmacy, and nutrition.
Established on September 17, 2012, under the Prime Minister’s Health Protection Scheme, AIIMS Jodhpur aims to provide affordable and reliable healthcare services across the nation.
2. Sawai Man Singh Medical College (SMS), Jaipur
SMS Medical College in Jaipur is ranked second among Rajasthan’s medical colleges. Admission to its MBBS course requires qualifying NEET UG, with counseling conducted by MCC based on merit lists and cut-off scores. The college also offers MD, MS, post-doctoral McH, and DM courses for candidates qualifying NEET PG and NEET SS.
The college provides paramedical courses like BSc, MSc, and diploma courses in radiotherapy, radiation technology, medical lab technology, prosthetics and orthotics. Additionally, it operates the Government College of Nursing.
Founded on March 13, 1946, by Lord Wavell and Maharaja Sawai Man Singh of Jaipur, the college commenced in July 1947 as the 15th medical education center in the country.
Madhya Pradesh’s Sole Top-50 Medical College
AIIMS Bhopal is the only college from Madhya Pradesh in the top 50, ranked 38th in the nation by NIRF.

AIIMS Bhopal tops the list of Madhya Pradesh’s medical colleges. It houses 42 departments, including anesthesiology, cardiology, dentistry, general surgery, microbiology, neurology, nursing, pediatrics, pharmacology, and psychiatry.
The institute offers MBBS and BSc Honors in Nursing after 12th, and postgraduate courses like MD, MS, McH, MSc Nursing, and PhD. Additional courses include Post Doctoral Certificate Courses (PDCC), Post Graduate Certificate Course in Medical Management of CBRNE Diseases (PGCMDM), and PhD programs.
Admissions to the MBBS program require qualifying NEET UG, while BSc Honors admissions necessitate clearing the institute’s entrance test post-12th. For MD and MS courses, NEET PG qualification is essential.
Established in 2012 under the Prime Minister’s Health Protection Scheme, AIIMS Bhopal aims to deliver affordable and dependable healthcare services.
Uttar Pradesh’s Five Premier Medical Colleges
According to NIRF 2023 rankings, five medical colleges from Uttar Pradesh feature among the top 50 nationwide. Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, ranks 7th nationally and first in the state, followed by Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi, which ranks 8th nationally and second in the state.
1. Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow
SGPGIMS Lucknow tops Uttar Pradesh’s medical colleges list. The institute offers 22 super-specialist courses. MBBS graduates can pursue medical postgraduate courses, including super-speciality DM (Doctorate of Medicine) and McH (Master of Surgery) after qualifying NEET SS.
Additionally, the college offers MD and MS courses through NEET PG, and PhD programs in 10 branches, including anesthesiology, cardiology, clinical immunology, emergency medicine, and rheumatology.
Founded on December 14, 1980, by then-President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, within the King George Medical University campus, SGPGIMS offers PG diploma courses in hospital administration and telemedicine and digital health, post-doctoral courses in subjects like intensive care medicine and organ transplant, and post-doctoral certificate courses in areas such as breast surgery, critical care medicine, and hemato-oncology.
Admission is through entrance exams post-12th, with 45% marks in physics, chemistry, maths, or biology required for eligibility.
2. Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi
BHU’s Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) is not a separate entity but encompasses three streams: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Ayurveda, and Faculty of Dental Sciences, with 45 departments under its purview.
Admission to MBBS programs requires qualifying NEET UG post-12th. The institute also offers nursing courses through university-level entrance exams. IMS started in 1960 with nine modern medicine departments and six Ayurveda departments.
3. King George Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow
Ranked 12th nationally and third in Uttar Pradesh, KGMU offers courses in 56 academic and clinical departments, including anatomy, biochemistry, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, community medicine, dermatology, and forensic medicine.
Admissions to MBBS require qualifying NEET UG post-12th, while MD/MS and super-speciality courses like DM/McH require NEET-PG and NEET-SS qualifications.
KGMU, founded in 1911, commenced its first batch in 1911, with its campus inaugurated in 1912 by Sir John Prescott Hewett.
4. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh
AIIMS Rishikesh ranks 22nd nationally and fourth in the state. The institute offers MBBS, MD/MS, PhD, and MDS courses, along with 27 types of diploma, PG diploma, and certificate courses in public health, medical radiotherapy, and SIT/HIV/AIDS.
Students can pursue MD/MS, DM in 44 branches, McH in 27 branches, 50 postgraduate certificate courses, and 19 fellowship courses. Admission to MBBS requires NEET UG qualification post-12th, while MD/MS requires NEET-PG.

Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College offers 25 departments, with courses like MBBS, BDS, McH in plastic surgery, MD/MS, MDS, PG diploma, PhD, paramedical courses, and BSc in radiotherapy. Admissions require NEET UG qualification post-12th.
