Geneva, September 23 (Udaipur Kiran) : India brought attention to the deteriorating situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir during a session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on September 24. Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi expressed concerns over the rising civilian casualties and the arrest of students in Islamabad and Rawalpindi since June.
Tyagi criticized Pakistan’s approach, stating that it fails to address the economic challenges the country faces. He urged Pakistan to focus on development rather than territorial claims and terrorism, emphasizing that such actions would not aid in repaying its economic debts.
The Indian representative pointed to reports of worsening conditions in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including civilian deaths and restrictions on food and medicine. He asserted, “If any delegation in this room meets every standard of investigation set by this council, it is Pakistan.”
Highlighting India’s diverse Muslim population, Tyagi noted that minorities in India actively participate in governance and leadership roles. He further stated that Pakistan, after decades of sponsoring cross-border terrorism, is in no position to raise the Jammu and Kashmir issue.
Tyagi remarked, “This council does not need clarification from Pakistan. This occurred in 1990 with the Kashmiri Pandits, who were driven from their homes by terrorists armed and trained by Pakistan. Those terrorists have since targeted Kashmiris of all faiths, many of whom are Muslims. The country that sponsored them is now demanding an inquiry from this council. This irony will not be lost on anyone.”
His comments came in response to Pakistan’s renewed focus on the Kashmir issue during the council session, to which India reiterated its stance that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inseparable part of India.
