Jharkhand High Court Takes Strong Stance on CCTV Installation in Police Stations

The Jharkhand High Court has issued notices to top police officials for failing to install CCTV cameras in police stations, citing serious concerns over custodial deaths.

Ranchi, September 24 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Jharkhand High Court has expressed serious concerns regarding the absence of CCTV cameras in police stations across the state. During a recent hearing, the court, led by Chief Justice M.S. Sonak, indicated that the state’s Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, and Director General of Police (DGP) could face contempt proceedings for their failure to comply with earlier court orders.

The court criticized the state government for allegedly concealing the true situation in its affidavit and adopting a dilatory approach. With over 450 cases of custodial deaths reported since 2018, the court emphasized the urgent need for surveillance in police stations to monitor such incidents. Despite four tenders being issued for the installation of cameras, no progress has been made, which the court described as unfortunate.

The DGP attempted to shift responsibility to the Home Department during the proceedings, a move the court deemed irresponsible. The next hearing is scheduled for October 15, by which time the officials have been instructed to respond to the notices. This case stems from an incident involving Tarun Mahato, a candidate from Ichagarh in the 2024 assembly elections, who alleged severe police brutality during his detention on November 19, 2025. His wife had previously written to the Chief Justice, prompting the court to take notice of the matter.
