Vadodara, September 23 (Udaipur Kiran) : President Droupadi Murmu called for a multidisciplinary approach in higher education to tackle complex contemporary issues such as climate change, artificial intelligence, poverty eradication, and democracy. Speaking at the 75th convocation ceremony of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Vadodara, she highlighted that solutions cannot be derived from a single field of study.
Murmu pointed out the university’s diverse academic offerings, which span arts, science, technology, medicine, law, social work, fine arts, performing arts, management, and journalism. She stressed the interconnectivity of societal problems, stating, “Climate change is not just an environmental studies issue. Artificial intelligence is not merely a computer science topic. Health is not confined to medical science, and eradicating poverty is not solely an economist’s concern.”
The President urged students to expand their understanding beyond their specific areas of study, advocating for the development of a broad perspective. “We need a scientific curiosity, an artist’s sensitivity, a historian’s viewpoint, an understanding of economics, and a consciousness of sociology,” she said.
Murmu also emphasized the importance of adopting rapidly changing technology with the right understanding and discretion. She reminded students that while artificial intelligence can provide solutions, it is their responsibility to ask the right questions. “Technology can accelerate processes, but deciding the direction of its use is up to the students,” she noted.
Furthermore, she encouraged students to align technological capabilities with human values and constitutional principles, urging educated citizens to embody the ideals of “justice, freedom, equality, and fraternity” as outlined in the Constitution.
During the convocation, it was announced that 229 candidates were eligible for the Doctor of Philosophy degree, 2,857 for master’s degrees, 8,863 for bachelor’s degrees, and 657 for postgraduate diplomas.
