Ujjain, September 28 (Udaipur Kiran) : Amid preparations for the Singhast Kumbh Mela in 2028, the historic Shahi Mosque in Ujjain has become a focal point of controversy, sparking debates over heritage preservation and urban development. The mosque, which dates back 630 years, is at the center of a road widening project that has raised concerns about its safety and the potential targeting of religious sites.
Heavy police presence has transformed the area into a fortified zone, as accusations from Muslim organizations claim that selective targeting of religious places is underway. Maulana Mushtaq Malik, president of the Tehreek Muslim Shabban, voiced strong opposition, stating, “There were attempts to demolish the historic Shahi Mosque for the Hindu Kumbh Mela. A decision was finally made to extend the road by just three feet, but any further extension could threaten the mosque, especially with a temple nearby that seems unaffected.”
Malik further expressed his alarm over the situation, likening the heavy security to a war zone and issuing a controversial warning regarding potential violence if the mosque were to be endangered.
In contrast, Congress MLA Arif Masood assured that the mosque would not be demolished or harmed. He emphasized that the matter is currently under judicial review, with two petitions submitted for immediate hearing. Masood urged the public to adhere to the appeals of the representative committee and the local Qazi, refraining from protests until an official announcement is made regarding the mosque’s status. He affirmed that there would be no interference with the mosque and pledged full cooperation in maintaining peace.
