Thane, September 30 (Udaipur Kiran) : In a shocking incident in Thane, Maharashtra, Pradeep Purnekar, a leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), was shot by unidentified assailants on September 29. The attack occurred in the Manorama Nagar area, near R Mall, where Purnekar sustained two gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Witnesses reported that two masked attackers opened fire on Purnekar before fleeing the scene. The incident has created panic in the neighborhood, prompting local authorities to initiate an investigation. Police are reviewing footage from nearby CCTV cameras in an effort to identify the shooters.
Purnekar, who was known to be close to former MP Rajan Vichare, has a familial connection to local politics; his brother, Jayanath Purnekar, is a former municipal councillor in Thane. Reports suggest that the attack may have taken place near Purnekar’s office in Ganesh Nagar, although police are still clarifying the exact circumstances surrounding the event.
As of now, the motive behind the attack remains unclear, with police exploring various angles in their investigation. This incident follows a recent case involving the murder of a police sub-inspector in Thane, raising concerns about the safety of political figures in the area. Purnekar’s wife, Vijeta Purnekar, and his brother had recently contested the Thane Municipal Corporation elections as candidates from Shiv Sena (UBT) but faced defeat.
