Indian Stock Market Opens Flat Amid Mixed Global Signals

Mumbai, September 17 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Indian stock market began on a flat note on September 17, 2026, influenced by mixed global signals. At 9:16 AM, the Sensex was down by 49 points, or 0.07%, at 74,291, while the Nifty gained 19 points, reaching 23,235.

Public sector undertakings (PSUs) bolstered the market during early trading, with the Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty PSE indices emerging as top gainers. Other sectors like Nifty Infra, Nifty India Defense, Nifty FMCG, Nifty Commodities, Nifty Metal, Nifty Realty, Nifty Consumption, Nifty India Manufacturing, and Nifty Auto were also in the green.

Conversely, the Nifty IT, Nifty Media, and Nifty Private Bank indices were in the red. Midcap and small-cap stocks showed stronger performance compared to large-cap stocks, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index rising by 221 points, or 0.36%, to 61,096, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index up by 88 points, or 0.46%, at 19,478.

Among the gainers in the Sensex pack were BEL, Eternal, Bajaj Finance, Tata Steel, Ultratech Cement, Asian Paints, NTPC, ITC, Adani Ports, Bajaj Finserv, Power Grid, Indigo, Maruti Suzuki, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Trent, and SBI. In contrast, the losers included TCS, HCL Tech, HDFC Bank, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, Titan, Sun Pharma, HUL, and Axis Bank.

Globally, markets showed mixed trends. Tokyo, Bangkok, Jakarta, and Seoul were in the green, while Shanghai and Hong Kong were in the red. The U.S. markets closed lower due to rising interest rates from the Federal Reserve, with the Dow Jones index experiencing a decline of 1.21%.

Experts noted that the Fed’s decision to raise interest rates by 25 basis points, or 0.25%, was entirely expected. Given the high inflation and a robust economy—reflected in an unemployment rate of just 4.1%—there was no reason to keep rates steady. They emphasized that Kevin Warsh’s strong message highlighted the persistent high inflation, making such measures necessary to stabilize prices.
