Smith Overtakes Gavaskar and Younis Khan, Climbs to 13th Spot in All-Time Test Run-Scorers List
Sydney, January 30: Australian batting stalwart Steve Smith has etched his name further into Test cricket’s history books by surpassing Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar and former Pakistan captain Younis Khan in the all-time highest run-scorers list in Test cricket.
Smith, who is leading Australia in the Test series against Sri Lanka, reached the 10,000-run milestone on January 29, becoming the 15th player in history to achieve this feat. A day later, he continued his dominance with the bat, overtaking Younis Khan (10,099 runs) and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122 runs) to climb further up the rankings.

Smith’s Masterclass Against Sri Lanka
The right-handed maestro played a sensational knock in the first Test against Sri Lanka, scoring 141 runs off 251 balls, which included 12 boundaries and 2 sixes. With his first run in the innings, he became a 10,000-run club member, while his century propelled him past Younis Khan.
With 23 more runs, Smith then overtook Sunil Gavaskar, placing himself among the top 15 run-scorers in Test history.
Smith’s Next Target: Steve Waugh’s Record
- With 10,145 Test runs, Smith now aims to surpass former Australian captain Steve Waugh (10,927 runs).
- Among Australian cricketers, he is currently fourth in the all-time Test run list, trailing:
- Ricky Ponting – 13,378 runs
- Allan Border – 11,174 runs
- Steve Waugh – 10,927 runs
Will Smith Break Ponting’s Record?
Given Smith’s consistency, Border and Waugh’s records appear well within reach in the coming years. However, Ricky Ponting’s massive tally of 13,378 runs may take longer to surpass.
With his exceptional form and hunger for runs, Steve Smith continues to cement his legacy as one of the greatest batsmen in Test cricket history.
