Kolkata, May 9 (Udaipur Kiran) — Shubhendu Adhikari took oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday, becoming the first BJP Chief Minister in the state.

Governor R. N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. Along with him, five other ministers also took oath, including Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were present during the swearing-in ceremony. Chief Ministers and Union Ministers from 20 states also attended the event.
Political circles are speculating that West Bengal may get two Deputy Chief Ministers. Dilip Ghosh and Agnimitra Paul are being considered for the posts. The remaining cabinet expansion will be done later.
BJP supporters carrying party flags and saffron banners gathered across Kolkata since morning and raised slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” during the programme.
The BJP won 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, securing more than a two-thirds majority. The Trinamool Congress, which ruled the state for 15 years, was reduced to 80 seats.
Shubhendu Adhikari started his political career as a grassroots Congress worker and later became one of the most influential leaders in the Trinamool Congress. He joined the BJP in 2020 after differences with Mamata Banerjee and soon emerged as the party’s biggest face in the state.
After defeating Mamata Banerjee from the Nandigram seat in the 2021 Assembly elections, Adhikari became a central figure in Bengal politics. BJP’s victory has now placed him at the centre of efforts to reshape the state’s political landscape.
Adhikari, who comes from Purba Medinipur district, has become the first Chief Minister in West Bengal in the last five decades to emerge from a district outside Kolkata’s traditional political centre. The last Chief Minister from a rural background was Ajoy Mukherjee in 1970.
