Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has announced a sweeping reorganization of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), eliminating 10,000 jobs in a move expected to save $1.8 billion annually. Two of the nation’s premier public health institutions—the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH)—will be significantly downsized under Kennedy’s plan.

• The CDC will lose 2,400 jobs, while absorbing the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, responsible for pandemic and disaster readiness.
