Jabalpur, June 20: President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Jabalpur on Saturday via a special Indian Air Force aircraft. She is set to participate in yoga sessions at the historic Garrison Ground on June 21, 2026, marking the first time a sitting president of India will join a yoga event at this renowned location, adding a significant chapter to its illustrious history.
Upon her arrival, President Murmu was welcomed by Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Deora. The welcoming ceremony was attended by Governor Mangubhai Patel, Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh, Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar, along with other representatives and officials.
President Murmu will spend the night at the Circuit House and will participate in the World Yoga Day event at 7 AM on Sunday. Later, at 11:50 AM, she will also attend the 36th convocation ceremony at Rani Durgavati University. Her visit to Jabalpur is scheduled to last approximately 19 hours.
Currently, President Murmu is on a five-day official tour of Madhya Pradesh. On the morning of June 21, she will lead the yoga session at Garrison Ground. The following day, June 22, she is scheduled to visit Kuno National Park in Shyopur district.
Garrison Ground, located in the Sadar area, derives its name from the British-era military cantonment. During colonial rule, the Sadar area became a major center for military activities, naturally leading to the ground being referred to as ‘Garrison Ground.’
Post-independence, it was systematically developed in 1953 and has since emerged as a prominent sports venue in Jabalpur. Over the decades, first-class cricket matches, including those featuring the West Indies team, have been held here. Many renowned players from Madhya Pradesh have showcased their talent at this venue. Besides cricket, regular competitions in football, hockey, athletics, and other sports have played a crucial role in nurturing local sporting talent.
The site also holds socio-political significance, having hosted large public gatherings, including rallies by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which attracted massive crowds.
This occasion is particularly special as it continues the legacy of high-profile visits; in 2023, then Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar participated in the Yoga Day celebrations at the same ground.
President Murmu’s presence at International Yoga Day 2026 is expected to inspire thousands of yoga enthusiasts and highlight the importance of yoga for physical and mental health.
Local administration, yoga organizations, and citizens are making extensive preparations to ensure the event runs smoothly and becomes a memorable celebration.
On the night of June 21, President Murmu will stay at Kuno National Park in Shyopur district. Her itinerary includes arriving in Gwalior on June 21 and then traveling to Kuno National Park in Palpur via a special Indian Air Force helicopter.
During her visit, the President will inspect the cheetah enclosures, review the care of animals brought from Botswana, and assess the overall progress of the ambitious ‘Project Cheetah.’ On June 22, she will embark on a cheetah safari within the park and engage with ‘Cheetah Friends,’ members of the cheetah monitoring team, and local Kuno guides.
