Bhopal, May 2: A series of meetings held by senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on May 1 has stirred political speculation in Madhya Pradesh. His discussions with Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and subsequent closed-door talks with state Congress president Jitu Patwari have fueled political conversations.
The sequence began with a meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence, where Singh raised issues concerning farmers, particularly the challenges faced in the current wheat procurement process. After the meeting, Singh emphasized the need for timely solutions to alleviate farmers’ difficulties and ensure smooth wheat procurement. Chief Minister Yadav confirmed that Singh had indeed brought up the farmers’ issues, especially regarding wheat procurement.
Yadav noted that over 80 lakh metric tons of wheat procurement slots had already been booked, and the process is progressing steadily. He assured that measures are being closely monitored to prevent any inconvenience to farmers.
During this time, Singh also invited Yadav to participate in a religious event scheduled at the end of the month in his hometown, Raghogarh.
As the evening approached, political activity shifted to Singh’s residence, where Jitu Patwari met him privately. Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Singh was also present at this meeting. Singh’s office confirmed the meeting, and a brief video showing Patwari leaving his residence was released, but details of the discussions remained undisclosed, intensifying speculation about the meeting’s purpose.
This meeting is considered significant, especially since a day earlier, a mild confrontation had occurred between Singh and Patwari during a Congress Scheduled Caste Cell meeting. Singh had raised concerns about the lack of adequate representation for the Valmiki and Basor communities within the party, advocating for greater participation.
He mentioned that Patwari has received considerable autonomy in organizational matters, which Patwari acknowledged respectfully, stating, “I am your disciple.” Singh humorously replied, “The guru remains jaggery, while the disciple has turned to sugar.”
These comments are viewed as indicative of shifting dynamics within the Congress party. This entire sequence of events comes at a time when the Congress is gearing up for upcoming political events, including the Rajya Sabha elections and the Datia assembly by-election.
Singh has recently completed his second consecutive term in the Rajya Sabha and has indicated that he does not wish to seek another term, although the Congress has yet to announce its candidate.
