Srinagar, May 2 – Pakistan has once again breached the ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border, initiating unprovoked firing in multiple sectors of Jammu and Kashmir, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Nowshera, and Akhnoor, according to Indian Army officials.

This renewed aggression follows the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people. Since then, Pakistani forces have continued to provoke Indian troops despite existing bilateral agreements on ceasefire.
Multiple Sectors Targeted in Coordinated Firing
According to top military sources, the firing began during the night of May 1–2, when Pakistani posts initiated small-arms fire without provocation across several strategic locations along the LoC. These included Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Nowshera, and Akhnoor, extending later to Sunderbani and the Pargwal sector along the International Border, marking the first such incident in that area since last week.
Indian troops responded effectively and with restraint, adhering to operational protocols to avoid escalation while firmly countering the aggression.
Similar incidents were recorded on April 30 and May 1, with Pakistani troops targeting forward positions in Uri and Akhnoor as well. On the night of April 29–30, Pakistani troops fired indiscriminately in Nowshera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor, with Kupwara and Baramulla also witnessing cross-border gunfire.
Tensions Rise Post Pahalgam Attack, Indus Waters Treaty Suspended
The recent terrorist strike in Pahalgam, attributed to cross-border elements, prompted India to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, a long-standing bilateral water-sharing agreement with Pakistan. In the wake of this suspension, Pakistani forces have escalated ceasefire violations, raising concerns of a deliberate strategy to provoke conflict.
The Indian Army, alongside other security forces, has heightened surveillance and deployed additional personnel in vulnerable sectors. Locals residing in border villages have been advised to remain in secure shelters, and emergency response teams are on standby to handle any eventualities.
Security Forces on High Alert
The escalation in ceasefire violations has led to a significant increase in military alertness along both the LoC and the International Border. Reinforcements and intelligence teams are monitoring infiltration attempts and coordinating with local administration to ensure civilian safety.
Officials reiterate that while India remains committed to peace, any provocation will be met with a firm and proportionate response.
