Irans Heavy Water Plant Severely Damaged, Operations Halted: IAEA

Vienna, March 30: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that Iran’s heavy water production facility located in Khondab, central Iran, has been severely damaged and is no longer operational.

The IAEA stated on the social media platform X that, based on independent analysis of satellite images and information from the plant, it confirmed the damage following an attack reported by Iran on March 27. The facility has sustained significant damage and is currently not in operation. Notably, there is no declared nuclear material at the plant, according to Xinhua news agency.

On March 27, the IAEA was informed by Iran about the attack on the Khondab facility, but it confirmed that there was no radiation threat detected. These attacks have occurred amid the ongoing U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict that escalated on February 28. Prior to Saturday, the IAEA had confirmed that Iran reported new attacks on major facilities, including the heavy water production plant in Khondab.

The agency announced on X that it received information from Iran regarding another attack on the heavy water production facility today. Due to the absence of declared nuclear material, there is no radiation risk.

Additionally, Iran reported that the Khuzestan Steel Production Factory, which uses sealed radioactive sources such as Cobalt-60 and Cesium-137 for industrial purposes, was also targeted. Officials stated that there has been no radiation leak from the facility, which continues to operate normally. Earlier on Friday, the IAEA expressed concern over military activities near the Bushehr nuclear power plant, marking the third such incident in ten days.
