Udaipur, 14th February 2025 – Rajasthan, known for its rich biodiversity, has recorded the presence of a new plant species, Ayokoma Arborcens, in the Mount Abu region of Sirohi district. This groundbreaking discovery was made by renowned environmental specialist and retired forest officer Dr. Satish Kumar Sharma, along with field ecologist Dr. Anil Saraswan from the Foundation for Ecological Security.

Dr. Sharma confirmed that Ayokoma Arborcens belongs to the Solanaceae family, commonly known as the nightshade or tomato family. The shrub features alternately arranged, simple, and large leaves. During April, clusters of greenish-white flowers bloom within the leaf axils, followed by small, round fruits that initially appear in clusters. By April-May, these fruits mature into a striking orange color.

This species, classified as an exotic plant, has now been identified across multiple locations in Mount Abu town and its wildlife sanctuary. Until now, Ayokoma Arborcens had only been recorded in the southern Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. With this latest sighting, Rajasthan becomes the third state in India where this rare species has been documented.

International Recognition for the Discovery

The research findings related to Ayokoma Arborcens have been published in the International Journal of Scientific Research in Biological Sciences (Volume II, Issue 6), signifying global acknowledgment of this discovery.

The scientific breakthrough by Dr. Sharma and Dr. Saraswan has been met with enthusiasm from environmentalists and conservationists, who regard it as a milestone for Rajasthan’s ecological documentation and conservation efforts.

This latest addition to the state’s flora highlights the diverse ecological landscape of Mount Abu, reinforcing its significance as a hotspot for botanical research and biodiversity conservation.
