PIMS Udaipur Doctors Remove Corn Kernel Blocking Patient’s Airway Through Bronchoscopy

Udaipur, October 6 (Udaipur Kiran): Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Umarda, successfully removed a small corn kernel lodged in a patient’s airway, providing immediate relief from severe breathing difficulty.

The patient was brought to the emergency department with severe breathlessness, difficulty in breathing and cough. A chest X-ray showed consolidation in one part of the lung. Initially, infection or airway obstruction was suspected. Considering the patient’s serious condition, doctors decided to perform an immediate bronchoscopy.

Bronchoscopy Reveals Hidden Foreign Body

During the bronchoscopy, doctors found an unexpected foreign body lodged in the lateral segment on the right side, causing obstruction of the airway.

The medical team successfully removed the foreign body with the help of a memory basket. After removal, it was identified as a corn kernel.

The patient’s condition improved dramatically immediately after the foreign body was removed. The severe breathing difficulty reduced rapidly, the patient was able to breathe comfortably and vital parameters remained stable.

Timely Bronchoscopy Helped Restore Breathing

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agrawal said the case highlights how even a very small foreign body can cause serious airway obstruction and potentially life-threatening respiratory distress.

He said timely bronchoscopy can not only help identify the exact cause of the problem but can also enable treatment during the same procedure. In this case, removal of the small corn kernel resulted in immediate improvement in the patient’s breathing, demonstrating the diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities of modern bronchoscopy.

Respiratory Medicine Team Performs Successful Procedure

The procedure was carried out by the Department of Respiratory Medicine team under the guidance of Dr Mayur Devraj, Dr Raju Kottakota, Dr Sanidhya Tak, Dr Karan Raj Singhal and Dr Aniruddha Aaron.

Resident doctors Dr Raj, Dr Muskan, Dr Aman, Dr Diksha, Dr Shyam, Dr Manisha, Dr Devendra, Dr Medha, Dr Tanya, Dr Pawan and Dr Ajay, along with bronchoscopy team members Giriraj Singh Shaktawat, Rahul Kumar and Mangidevi, made important contributions to the procedure.

Bronchoscopy Identified the Actual Cause

The case was significant for the doctors because the consolidation visible on the X-ray could have indicated another medical condition. However, bronchoscopy revealed the actual cause—a small corn kernel lodged in the airway.

The timely bronchoscopic intervention not only established the correct diagnosis but also removed the airway obstruction during the same procedure, providing immediate relief to the patient.

The case highlights that serious respiratory symptoms can sometimes be caused by a small foreign body and that timely bronchoscopy can play an important role in such potentially serious situations.
