Bringing the Revolutionary Light & Space Movement to India for the First Time
Mumbai, 15th February 2025 – The Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) has unveiled its sixth landmark visual art exhibition, ‘Light into Space’, at the Art House with an exclusive preview night that saw an assembly of leading cultural figures, art connoisseurs, and creative visionaries.
Curated by the prestigious New York-based Dia Art Foundation, this first-of-its-kind international exhibit showcases the radical Light & Space movement, a pioneering visual art ethos that emerged in Southern California during the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition features iconic works from some of the most influential artists of the era, including John Chamberlain, Mary Corse, Walter De Maria, Dan Flavin, Nancy Holt, Robert Irwin, Robert Smithson, and François Morellet.
Spanning across four floors of NMACC’s dedicated visual arts space, the exhibit harnesses light, space, and industrial materials to create dynamic, immersive experiences that engage viewers and challenge conventional perceptions of reality.

A Spectacle of Light, Perception, and Environment
‘Light into Space’ explores the groundbreaking interplay between light and environment, drawing on materials such as fluorescent lights, polished metals, industrial plastics, mirrors, and reflective paints. The exhibition moves beyond traditional artistic expressions like paintings and sculptures, presenting large-scale installations that transform the spectator into a participant, making each interaction unique and irreplicable.
Unveiled by Ms. Isha Ambani, the grand opening was attended by Jessica Morgan, Nathalie de Gunzburg Director and Curator of Dia Art Foundation, and Min Sun Jeon, Assistant Curator at Dia Art Foundation, alongside renowned artists, collectors, and members of the global arts community.
A Global Art Movement Finds a Home in India
The Light & Space movement redefined the boundaries of visual art, departing from traditional modes of artistic expression and emphasizing perceptual experience, spatial awareness, and material innovation. The exhibition at NMACC marks the first time these influential works have been presented in India as a unified collection, offering Indian audiences an opportunity to engage with one of the most important avant-garde movements of the 20th century.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Isha Ambani remarked:
“We are delighted to bring ‘Light into Space’ to India for the first time, introducing audiences to the transformative power of the Light & Space movement. At NMACC, we strive to showcase thought-provoking and boundary-pushing exhibitions that redefine the art-viewing experience. This exhibition invites visitors to explore art beyond the conventional, engaging with light and perception in a way that is deeply immersive and personal.”
