NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, known for its groundbreaking discoveries and stunning images of the cosmos, has ceased scientific operations. NASA is actively working to resume science operations after the Hubble Space Telescope enters safe mode on April 23, 2024.
The space agency confirmed in a blog post that the gyroscope error is occurring again. Despite the failure, the Hubble instrument remains stable and the telescope remains in good condition. The main problem is the misinterpretation of one of Hubble’s three gyroscopes. When will it work again?

What is the defect of the gyroscope?
When one of the three gyroscopes detected an irregular reading, the telescope automatically entered safe mode. The gyroscope is an important component that measures the rotation speed of the telescope and helps determine its direction. NASA added: The gyroscope is part of the system that determines which direction the telescope points.
However, this isn’t the first time this particular gyroscope has caused problems. A similar incident occurred in November 2023 after measuring similar errors. NASA engineers are currently working on possible solutions to solve the gyro problem, including the possibility of reconfiguring the spacecraft to operate with just one gyro while keeping the remaining operational gyros in reserve.
Future plans for NASA’s Hubble Telescope
Despite the age of the spacecraft, the team is optimistic about finding a solution and getting it back to full functionality. Originally equipped with six gyroscopes during the last servicing mission in 2009, the spacecraft now relies on three gyroscopes, but can continue its scientific observations with just one if necessary.
NASA expects Hubble to continue making important discoveries in collaboration with other observatories. The agency’s James Webb Space Telescope will operate for the next decade and perhaps another decade. However, using only one gyroscope may affect performance.
It should be noted that Hubble, launched in 1990, has contributed to our understanding of the universe and continues to be an important tool for astronomers around the world. The telescope recently celebrated its 34th anniversary in orbit.
