Tilak Varma Credits Bowlers for India’s Success in New Zealand T20I Series
Tilak Varma praised India's bowlers for their performance in high-scoring matches against New Zealand, leading to a 3-0 series lead.
AUCKLAND, Oct 29: India’s Tilak Varma commended the team’s bowlers for their vital contributions during high-scoring matches in New Zealand. The Indian side has taken a commanding 3-0 lead in the T20I series, winning all three games while chasing significant totals set by the hosts.
Speaking on Thursday, Varma noted, “In the last two games we have bowled really well… especially in the death overs and the middle phase.” He pointed to the execution of yorkers, particularly by Prince Yadav, which he described as a positive sign for the team moving forward. The Indian bowlers have performed effectively despite challenging conditions, and Varma emphasized their importance for the upcoming matches.
The series has provided India’s T20 team an opportunity for a whitewash, a much-needed outcome for a squad under Shreyas Iyer’s leadership that has struggled for consistency. Varma acknowledged the hectic schedule, which has seen the team travel extensively across New Zealand, but stressed the importance of maintaining high standards for younger players. He stated, “We are at this level that we cannot give excuses. We are in the top level, we have to set the standards.”
Varma also shared insights into the mental preparation of the players, noting that team meetings have focused on the importance of setting a standard for upcoming formats like One Day Internationals and Test matches. He indicated that the team is committed to translating their T20 success into future performances.
Varma mentioned teammate Naman Dhir’s excellent bowling form, while also expressing his readiness to contribute with the ball when necessary: “I am confident, when I get a chance, I will bowl.” The players are currently focused on continuing their winning streak as they approach the fourth T20I match in Auckland.
