Mumbai, July 5: Despite the heavy downpour in the economic capital of the country, Mumbai, on Saturday, the Western Railway’s suburban and long-distance train services continued to operate normally. Vinay Abhishek, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Western Railway, stated that extensive preparations made before the monsoon and the deployment of dedicated staff at various locations helped mitigate the impact of the rain on train operations.
Abhishek mentioned that significant rainfall was recorded in several areas of Western Railway during the continuous heavy rain since morning. Between Borivali and Virar, rainfall ranged from 200 to 250 mm, while other areas recorded between 150 to 200 mm. Nevertheless, the local trains of Western Railway ran continuously without any interruptions. This was made possible due to the railway’s special focus on monsoon preparations throughout the year, which included micro-tunneling, the construction of new drainage systems, regular cleaning of drains, and the removal of sludge.
The CPRO noted that during heavy rainfall, special staff was deployed at all sensitive and waterlogging-prone locations. This included station staff, engineering department personnel, signaling department staff, and track maintenance workers who were present on-site. Continuous monitoring of critical bridges, tracks, and other sensitive areas was conducted to ensure that any emergency situations could be addressed promptly to avoid disruptions in train operations.
Regarding passenger safety and crowd management, Abhishek explained that heavy rainfall often leads to increased crowds at stations. To manage this, emergency staff from various departments were stationed at major and crowded stations. In case of any changes in train operations, these staff members were responsible for informing passengers, controlling crowds, and maintaining order.
Abhishek further reported that while there were minor instances of waterlogging at some locations, the micro-tunneling work done before the monsoon and the high-capacity pumps installed at various sites facilitated quick drainage of water. Although water levels rose under several bridges, train operations were not disrupted anywhere, and all services continued as usual.
According to the railway administration, while heavy rainfall affected normal life in the city, the prior preparations, vigilant monitoring, and prompt actions by the staff ensured that suburban and long-distance train services continued without major disruptions. The railway administration emphasized that ensuring passenger safety and uninterrupted rail service during the monsoon is its top priority.
