Manchester, July 5: England made history by defeating India by four wickets in the second T20 International match. Chasing a target of 191 runs set by India, the English team successfully achieved the goal in 19 overs, losing six wickets in the process.
This victory marks England’s successful chase of the highest target against India in T20 Internationals, breaking a 14-year-old record. Previously, in 2012, England had chased down a target of 178 runs against India. The English team also maintained its strong record at Old Trafford, marking their fourth consecutive win at this venue.
England’s innings got off to a rocky start as Phil Salt was dismissed by Arshdeep Singh without scoring. Jos Buttler also fell for a duck, leaving the team in a precarious position at one run for two wickets. However, captain Harry Brook and Jacob Bethel steadied the innings, forming a crucial partnership of 50 runs for the third wicket off just 23 balls.
Brook scored a quick 39 runs off 15 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes, while Bethel remained unbeaten with 76 runs from 46 balls, showcasing a strike rate of 165 with five fours and five sixes. Tom Banton contributed 39 runs from 32 balls, while Will Jacks (9 runs) and Sam Curran (7 runs) had modest outings. Jofra Archer finished not out with 10 runs.
Earlier, India set a competitive total of 190 runs, losing seven wickets in their 20 overs, thanks to explosive innings from Abhishek Sharma (43 runs), Ishan Kishan (49 runs), and captain Shreyas Iyer (37 runs). Tilak Varma added a quick 24 runs off 11 balls, while 15-year-old debutant Vaibhav Suryaanshi chipped in with 14 runs.
