New Delhi, April 5, 2025 – As the Indian subcontinent continues to reel under rising temperatures, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive weather forecast highlighting heatwaves, rainfall, and thunderstorms affecting large swathes of the country. With the mercury breaching 40°C in several areas and snow continuing in parts of North India, varied weather extremes are being observed nationwide.

Heatwave Conditions in Central India
States like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh are expected to face intensified heatwave conditions over the coming days. The temperature in these regions may rise by 2°C to 4°C, adding to the discomfort caused by already sweltering conditions. Delhi, Gujarat, and Maharashtra may also experience a surge in daytime heat, with potential relief expected later this week.
Meanwhile, hill stations in North India continue to witness snowfall and below-normal temperatures, offering some climatic contrast to the rest of the country.
IMD Alerts for Thunderstorms and Rainfall
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Kerala, particularly in districts like Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram, due to the threat of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Mumbai and surrounding coastal regions are also likely to witness wind speeds of 30–40 km/h with isolated downpours.
Other affected regions include:
-
Northeast India – Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura through April 6.
-
South India – Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Central Maharashtra may experience localized heavy rainfall, lightning, and hailstorms.
-
Goa, Karnataka, and Chhattisgarh – Expected to receive thunderstorms with lightning over the next 24-48 hours.
Lightning, Hailstorms, and Monsoon Signals
As per IMD’s warning, hailstorms with lightning are anticipated in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of Central India. This unusual weather pattern is being monitored closely as it could signal the early shifts in monsoonal behavior.
Simultaneously, heatwave alerts are active for several regions, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, posing health risks to vulnerable populations.
