Paris : French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden hold a joint summit, and both sides have accepted the idea, the Elysee Palace informs.
“He (Macron) proposed a summit to be held between President Biden and President Putin and then with relevant stakeholders to discuss security and strategic stability in Europe,” the French presidency said in a Sunday statement, adding that “Both accepted the principle of such a summit.”
According to the release, the agenda of the summit is to be prepared by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during their upcoming meeting on February 24. The Elysee Palace specified that such a summit can only be held “at the condition that Russia does not invade Ukraine.”
“The President of the Republic will work with all stakeholders to prepare the content of these discussions,” the French presidency concluded. Earlier on Sunday, Macron held telephone talks with Putin, at the French side’s initiative. The presidents agreed on trilateral group (Russia, Ukraine, OSCE – Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) talks on Ukraine to be held on Monday, according to media reports.
The Russian president also reportedly confirmed to Macron the intention to withdraw troops from Belarus after the ongoing joint military exercise is over. Macron also discussed Ukraine with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday, with the latter telling his French counterpart that Putin’s “commitments” to Macron suggest openness to finding a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis, according to Downing Street. On Sunday night, Macron also briefly discussed the Ukraine situation with Biden over the phone, according to the White House.
