New Delhi, September 29 (Udaipur Kiran) : Australia has suffered a significant setback ahead of the third and final ODI match against South Africa, set to take place on Wednesday. The team will be without right-arm fast bowler Nathan Ellis and left-arm spinner Joel Davis due to injuries.
Nathan Ellis has been ruled out with a side strain, while Joel Davis sustained a hamstring strain while fielding as a substitute in the second ODI. Ellis was injured after bowling just four overs in the previous match, which proved costly for Australia as South Africa posted a formidable total of 365 runs.
Ellis is expected to return to Australia for treatment and recovery, with hopes of being fit in time for the home ODI series against England starting on November 13. In his absence, captain Pat Cummins may return to the lineup for the third ODI, and Mitchell Starc, who was rested for the second match, could also be included in the playing XI. However, Josh Hazlewood, who played in the first two ODIs, might miss the final match.
Davis, brought along as a specialist spinner, did not get a chance to play in any match and will undergo rehabilitation before returning to domestic cricket with New South Wales.
No replacements have been named for Ellis and Davis ahead of the last ODI against South Africa, where Australia will aim to salvage some pride after losing the first two matches of the three-match series. Following the ODI series, Australia is scheduled to play three Test matches against South Africa starting on October 9.
