Low Pressure System to Increase Rainfall in West Bengal from Tuesday

Kolkata, 2 September (Kiran News): A cyclonic circulation over the northeast Bay of Bengal, near the Myanmar coastal region, is likely to develop into a low-pressure area on Tuesday. As a result, almost all districts in West Bengal are expected to see intensified rainfall. The Meteorological Department has warned of rough seas and strong winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kilometres per hour. As a precaution, fishermen have been barred from venturing into the sea.

South Bengal Weather Update

This monsoon season has set a record for low-pressure systems, with such conditions developing 13 times in the past 43 days. On Monday night, most districts of South Bengal experienced rain with thunder and lightning. Some locations reported 12 to 14 lightning strikes per minute.

On Tuesday, heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is forecast in nearly all districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, and Jhargram. The highest rainfall is expected in South 24 Parganas, where a warning for “very heavy rain” has been issued. These conditions are likely to persist until Wednesday, after which the low-pressure system is expected to move westwards towards Jharkhand, resulting in a reduction in rainfall from Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, there is no forecast for heavy rain in any district of North Bengal at this time, although isolated heavy showers may occur in Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Malda. Other districts are likely to see light to moderate rain and thunderstorms.

On Monday night, Kolkata recorded 40 mm of rainfall, with the heaviest rain falling in areas adjacent to South 24 Parganas. The minimum temperature dropped from 27°C to 25.1°C during the night. Due to rain and clouds, Kolkata’s maximum temperature on Tuesday is expected to remain around 30°C.
