Bhubaneswar, October 24 (Udaipur Kiran) – A low-pressure area has formed over the eastern part of the Bay of Bengal and is moving in a west-northwest direction, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday. The weather system is likely to intensify further over the next 24 hours.
According to the IMD, the system is expected to bring heavy rainfall, lightning, and strong winds to several coastal and southern districts of Odisha. The conditions are likely to persist till October 27.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for 11 districts — including Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Kalahandi, and Koraput — urging residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during adverse weather.
The department stated that the low-pressure area is currently active over the South Andaman Sea and the southeast Bay of Bengal, and is expected to move towards the east-central Bay of Bengal, where it may intensify further.
Light to moderate rainfall is also expected in other parts of the state due to the influence of the system. The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea and has directed coastal district administrations to remain on alert.
