US Ends Trade Talks with Canada over Controversial Tariff Ad

Washington, October 24 (Udaipur Kiran) – US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will no longer hold trade negotiations with Canada, following his strong objection to a negative television advertisement aired in Canada regarding US tariffs.

US-Canada trade talks

According to an ABC News report, Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, “Tariffs are vital for America’s national security and economy. Based on their disgraceful behaviour, all trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated.”

The advertisement campaign began earlier this month in Ontario, Canada. It included audio excerpts from a 1987 speech by former US President Ronald Reagan, delivered when he imposed tariffs on certain Japanese goods. In the same speech, Reagan had also warned about the long-term economic risks of high tariffs and the potential dangers of trade wars.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute released a statement on social media on Thursday evening, saying that the Canadian advertisement campaign had used “selective audio and video” from Reagan’s speech, misrepresenting his original message.

Referring to the advertisement, Trump said, “They did this only to interfere with the decisions of the US Supreme Court and other courts.” Notably, the Supreme Court is soon expected to decide whether Trump’s wide-ranging global reciprocal tariffs were an illegal use of emergency powers by Congress and whether the billions of dollars collected so far should be refunded.

Earlier this month, Trump had expressed optimism about a possible US-Canada trade agreement during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House, saying both sides had made significant progress in discussions. In July, Trump had imposed a 35% tariff on most goods and raw materials imported from Canada.
