Former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has hit back at Baba Ramdev over the ₹50-crore defamation case filed by Patanjali Foods, alleging that Ramdev is the “emperor of adulterators” and claiming that several of his products have been banned in different countries.
The defamation case is linked to Singh’s earlier remarks about Patanjali ghee. Patanjali Foods has filed a ₹50-crore defamation suit against the former MP, alleging that his comments damaged the company’s brand image. The matter is being heard in the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Speaking to the media, Brij Bhushan said that the controversy over the defamation claim was also generating discussion about food adulteration.
“Today, adulterated ghee, oil and food items are available. I will not say that only Ramdev ji is responsible for this, but he is certainly the emperor of those involved in adulteration,” Singh said, according to the report.
He also claimed that several Patanjali products had been banned in different countries and referred to action taken by the food safety department in Pithoragarh. He further claimed that a case was pending in the High Court and that the Supreme Court had also made observations.
‘What Is Our Fault in the Defamation Case?’
Brij Bhushan said Patanjali had filed a defamation case against him and questioned what fault he had committed.
He said that discussion was part of politics and that he had earlier been in the news over several issues. He added that, with what he described as Ramdev’s “grace”, the issue of allegedly fake ghee had once again brought him into the spotlight.
‘Eating Ramdev’s Ghee Will Not Make Your Child Healthy’
Referring to the original controversy, Brij Bhushan said the matter dated back to 2022.
He recalled attending an event where he advised people to rear cows, grow their own vegetables, produce their own milk and make their own ghee.
“Otherwise, eating Ramdev’s ghee will not make your child healthy,” he said, referring to his earlier remarks.
Reports have confirmed that Singh had publicly questioned Patanjali ghee in 2022, after which the dispute between him and the Patanjali group continued.
‘How Can It Be Sold for ₹500?’
Singh said that the following day, Acharya Balkrishna called him.
According to Singh, he asked Balkrishna that if 30 kg of cow’s milk was required to produce 1 kg of ghee, the cost would come to ₹900 if milk cost ₹30 per kg.
He questioned how a product that costs ₹900 to produce could be sold for ₹500.
“I did not get any answer to this,” Singh said.
Patanjali has disputed Singh’s allegations and has pursued the defamation case, with the company claiming that his statements harmed its reputation and caused financial losses.
