New Delhi, February 13: India’s top-order batting strategy has become clear following their victory in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup: aggressive play during the powerplay, a fast start, and leveraging the team’s depth to set a target of over 200 runs. This approach was brilliantly showcased by Ishan Kishan on Thursday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, where he laid the foundation for India’s record 93-run win over Namibia by scoring 61 runs off just 24 balls.
Kishan hit six fours and five sixes during his innings. Thanks to his explosive batting, India scored 86 runs in the powerplay, marking the highest score in this tournament during that phase. However, the team faced some challenges in the middle overs, losing two wickets on their way to a total of 209 runs.
At one point, it seemed India might alter their aggressive strategy, especially as wickets fell while attempting big shots. Nevertheless, Kishan maintained his aggression while spending time at the crease. In the final over of the powerplay, he struck four consecutive sixes and a four, accumulating 28 runs. India reached 100 runs in just 6.5 overs, setting a new record for the fastest team century in the tournament.
After the game, Kishan told reporters, “We are all in good touch and trying to make the most of the powerplay. We knew that once the ball stops swinging, we could score extra runs in the overs. That was the plan, and each game presents different situations. It will be different when we play against Pakistan tomorrow. Therefore, it’s crucial for us to quickly gauge the wickets, bowling, bowlers, etc. If I need to take a single to give someone else the strike, I will do that. Understanding the game situation is essential, and I believe if you get a good start in the powerplay, you should always try to capitalize on it.”
He also emphasized the need for one of the top three batsmen to play a long innings. Kishan mentioned that he has matured more than before; he used to joke around all the time, but now he focuses more on batting and wicketkeeping. Under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir, he is concentrating on improving his game. The year 2026 has been significant for Kishan, as he has scored 296 runs in six innings since returning to the team, with an average of 49.33 and a strike rate of 222.55, making him one of India’s most effective batsmen.
After playing two matches in the 2023 ODI World Cup, he was dropped from the team and lost his central contract. However, after two years of hard work and impressive performances in domestic cricket, he has made a comeback.
