New Delhi, May 1: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the launch of India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-free tolling system on Friday. This system has been initiated at the Choryasi toll plaza on the Surat-Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat, allowing vehicles to pay tolls without stopping.
This modern system utilizes advanced technologies such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag, enabling toll deductions while vehicles are in motion. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways provided this information.
According to the ministry, this system will reduce travel time, decrease traffic congestion on highways, save fuel, lower vehicle emissions, and minimize human intervention in toll operations.
The statement emphasized that the introduction of MLFF is a significant step towards the digitization of India’s toll system and the modernization of national highways, aligning with international standards.
Gadkari stated that this barrier-free tolling system will simplify life for the public and facilitate business operations, as it will enhance the speed and efficiency of goods and logistics movement.
The Union Minister further mentioned that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this initiative is a major step towards creating world-class, technology-based, transparent, and passenger-friendly highway infrastructure in the country.
In April, the central government implemented a digital payment system for all national highway toll plazas across the country. The ministry reported that from April 10, all user fees at toll plazas are being collected exclusively through digital means, such as FASTag and Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
The use of FASTag in the country has surpassed 98%, leading to a significant transformation in the toll collection system. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has instructed all banks issuing FASTags to promptly verify the vehicle registration numbers (VRN) linked to the FASTags.
