Hubble Telescope Captures Stunning Image of Spiral Galaxy NGC 3137

New Delhi, May 1: NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has captured a breathtaking image of a sparkling spiral galaxy, known as NGC 3137, located approximately 53 million light-years away in the Antlia constellation. This nearby spiral galaxy is significant for astronomers as it offers a unique opportunity to study the entire cycle of star birth and death, while also providing a glimpse into systems similar to our Milky Way.

NGC 3137 is part of a group that closely resembles the Local Group, which includes our Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy. This group also contains two large spiral galaxies, NGC 3137 and NGC 3175, along with several smaller dwarf galaxies. Researchers are currently investigating the possibility of over 500 dwarf galaxies within the NGC 3175 group. By studying this group, scientists aim to enhance their understanding of galaxy dynamics and behavior.

The Hubble Telescope has produced a detailed image of NGC 3137 across six different color bands, revealing a center surrounded by dusty clouds. At its core lies a supermassive black hole, estimated to be about 60 million times the mass of our Sun.

The galaxy appears tilted from our viewpoint, showcasing its loose, feather-like spiral arms. The most striking features are the dense clusters of bright blue stars and glowing red gas clouds, indicating the presence of hot, young stars still in their birth nebulae. These star clusters are the main focus of Hubble’s observations.

Led by Professor D. Thilker, the observing program is part of the PHANGS-HST initiative, which studies star clusters in 55 nearby galaxies. This program integrates Hubble’s optical and ultraviolet data with observations from the James Webb Space Telescope and ALMA, allowing astronomers to conduct an in-depth study of the life cycles of stars in spiral galaxies, from the birth of young stars to ancient star clusters.
