As torrential rains pound multiple regions across India, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded yellow and orange alerts in several states, including Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Despite worsening weather conditions, as of May 19, 2025, there has been no official confirmation of school closures from any major district administration.

Parents and students are being urged to stay updated through official government websites and district portals, as evolving conditions may warrant sudden announcements. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation amid rising concerns around public safety, flooding, and potential disruptions to daily life.
Bangalore and Karnataka: Streets Flooded, Travel Disrupted
In Bangalore, a yellow alert remains active after the city witnessed heavy rainfall on the night of May 18. According to the IMD’s Bengaluru office, the city recorded 103 mm of rainfall within 24 hours. PTI reports indicate that widespread waterlogging has affected traffic movement, with major roads in Horamavu, NC Colony on Tannery Road, and Silk Board Junction submerged in knee-deep water.
The city continues to reel under traffic snarls, submerged residential areas, and overflowing stormwater drains. Despite mounting pressure from parents and citizens for temporary closures, schools are yet to declare holidays. However, several institutions have encouraged remote learning and work-from-home setups until the alert subsides, which is expected to stay in place till May 21. Wind speeds between 50 and 60 km/h are also forecast.
Kerala: Orange Alert for Southern Districts, Thunderstorm Risk
In Kerala, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta, signaling the potential for extremely heavy rain between 11 cm and 20 cm in the next 24 hours. A yellow alert has also been sounded for Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
Thunderstorms with gusty winds up to 40 km/h are expected in isolated areas. While there have been no announcements regarding school closures, the state government has advised educational institutions to monitor local conditions and act accordingly to ensure student safety.
Tamil Nadu and Mumbai: Pre-Monsoon Showers Bring Relief and Risk
Tamil Nadu is experiencing intermittent pre-monsoon showers, with thunderstorms likely to continue in the coming days. While rainfall has brought some respite from the heat, the IMD has issued a safety advisory urging citizens to remain cautious due to the possibility of localized flooding and gusty winds. So far, schools remain operational with no closures announced.
Meanwhile, Mumbai and nearby districts like Thane, Palghar, and Raigad have been witnessing light to moderate rain accompanied by thundershowers. The IMD has forecast wind speeds of up to 60 km/h, and the alert is expected to stay in effect until May 22. Local officials are on standby to respond to any escalation in conditions.
Pune and Maharashtra: Moderate Rain and Lightning Forecast
In Pune and other parts of Maharashtra including Kolhapur, Satara, Nashik, and Ahilyanagar, the IMD has forecast moderate rainfall and thunderstorms for May 19. There is also a warning for lightning and gusty winds in several districts, particularly in the South Konkan-Goa and Marathwada regions.
No school closures have been confirmed, but institutions have been advised to prioritize safety and closely monitor weather updates from the Regional Meteorological Centre.
Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand: Orange Alerts in Hilly Areas
The IMD has issued orange alerts for seven districts in Himachal Pradesh—Mandi, Kullu, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur—due to the likelihood of hailstorms, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. The inclement weather has already caused power outages and roadblocks in some areas. Schools are continuing regular classes but may shift to remote learning if conditions worsen.
In Uttarakhand, an orange warning has been issued for May 19 and 20. The state police have advised pilgrims traveling as part of the ongoing Chardham Yatra to proceed with caution and contact emergency helplines when needed. While there is no official word on school closures, heavy rain and landslide risks could impact school attendance in remote or hilly regions.
Safety First, Stay Updated
With monsoon conditions intensifying across multiple Indian states, educational institutions are being urged to remain vigilant. Parents and students are advised to stay informed through district portals, local news, and government announcements. The IMD continues to provide real-time updates on alerts and weather developments to aid in timely decision-making.
