Google has rolled out a significant battery health update for Pixel devices as part of the December Pixel Feature Drop. This update introduces two key features: battery charging limit and bypass charging, both aimed at enhancing battery longevity and optimizing power management.

Battery Charging Limit: Prolonging Battery Lifespan
The battery charging limit feature allows users to cap their Pixel device’s charge at 80 percent, a functionality increasingly seen on flagship Android devices like the OnePlus 13 and the latest iPhones.
- Purpose: Prevents overcharging, reducing stress on the battery to prolong its lifespan.
- How to Enable:
- Navigate to Settings > Battery > Charging Optimization.
- Toggle the option and select the limit to 80 percent setting.
- Availability: Google’s support page confirms that this feature is available on Pixel 6a and later devices.
Bypass Charging: A Game-Changer for Battery Health
The update also brings bypass charging, a feature designed to minimize battery usage during prolonged charging sessions:
- How It Works:
- When the battery reaches 80 percent and remains plugged in, the device stops relying on the battery and draws power directly from the charger.
- This reduces battery wear and avoids unnecessary charge-discharge cycles.
- Activation Conditions:
- The device must have the 80 percent battery limit enabled and achieved.
- The phone must remain plugged into the charger for bypass charging to activate.
Additional Charging Optimizations
Pixel devices also feature Adaptive Charging, which gradually charges the device overnight to reach 100 percent just before the user’s typical wake-up time. However, enabling Adaptive Charging disables the bypass charging feature.
Device Compatibility and Future Updates
Google has yet to confirm the complete list of devices supporting bypass charging. However, any Pixel phone receiving the December update, starting with Pixel 6a and later, is expected to support these features.
