New Feature Enhances Navigation and Playback Efficiency
Google has introduced a highly requested enhancement to the Google Home app, allowing users to double-tap to quickly seek through camera history recordings. This long-awaited feature, now available in the Public Preview program, brings faster and more intuitive navigation, aligning Google Home’s playback controls with standard video players.
Google Home 3.30 Update Rolls Out Quick Seek Feature
Latest Update: Available on Android and iOS
With the latest Google Home 3.30 update, released on March 19, users can now rewind or fast-forward through security camera footage in 10-second increments using a simple double-tap gesture. The update is available on both Android and iOS but remains in Public Preview for the time being.
✔ Double-tap the right side of the video window → Skip forward 10 seconds.
✔ Double-tap the left side of the video window → Rewind 10 seconds.
✔ Pinch-to-zoom remains intact, allowing users to enlarge video frames for detailed viewing.
Previously, navigating Google Home’s camera history required a long press and scrubber sliding, a cumbersome method compared to the instant skipping feature now implemented.
Original Behavior vs. New Navigation System
How Camera History Playback Worked Before
Before this update, Google Home’s camera history view had a less intuitive navigation method:
✔ Double-tap → Zoomed in or out of the video feed.
✔ Scrubber bar usage → Required long-pressing and dragging to move through recorded footage.
This method made it difficult to review specific moments quickly, forcing users to manually scrub through lengthy video recordings.
Why This Update is a Game-Changer
Google’s 10-second quick seek update significantly improves usability and efficiency. By aligning Google Home’s playback gestures with widely accepted video player controls (such as YouTube, Netflix, and streaming apps), users can now instantly access key moments in security footage.
Who Can Access This Feature?
The double-tap quick seek function is currently available only to users enrolled in Google’s Public Preview program. If you’re part of this program, you can check for the update by ensuring your Google Home app is on version 3.30 or later.
However, some users on Android and iOS report that the feature has not yet appeared on their devices, suggesting a gradual rollout. Google has not confirmed when this feature will exit Public Preview and become widely available.
More Quality-of-Life Improvements for Google Home Users
What’s Next for Google Home?
The addition of quick seek for camera history hints at Google’s broader effort to refine the Google Home experience. With smart home devices becoming increasingly integrated into daily life, Google is likely to introduce more streamlined controls in the future, including:
✔ AI-powered event detection for quicker access to key moments in security footage.
✔ Expanded gesture controls for better interaction with Nest cameras and smart displays.
✔ Cross-device synchronization, ensuring Google Home features work seamlessly across smartphones, tablets, and Google Assistant-enabled devices.
