Google continues its shift towards Gemini AI, and as part of this transition, Google Assistant is losing seven more features across Android phones, Nest Hub, and smart displays. This follows an earlier announcement in 2024, where Google confirmed the removal of 18 Assistant features.

On Friday, Google quietly updated its list, confirming additional feature removals that will affect smart displays, speaker devices, and mobile users.
📉 Features Being Removed from Google Assistant
Here’s a breakdown of the seven features that will no longer be available:
1️⃣ Photo Favorites, Sharing, and Metadata Search via Voice Commands
- Users will no longer be able to favorite, share, or ask about the location/date of photos using voice commands.
- Alternative: You can still perform these actions manually in the Google Photos app or view photo details on a Smart Display or tablet.
2️⃣ Change Photo Frame or Ambient Screen Settings via Voice
- Users must now manually adjust these settings through their Smart Display settings.
3️⃣ Google Assistant Interpreter Mode Removed
- This feature, introduced in 2019, allowed smart displays and speakers to function as real-time translation devices.
- Alternative: Google is pushing users to rely on the Google Translate app for translations.
4️⃣ Birthday Reminder Notifications in Routines
- Automated birthday reminders will no longer be available.
- Alternative: Users can still manually set birthday reminders via Google Assistant.
5️⃣ Family Bell Announcements to Be Discontinued
- Users will no longer be able to schedule or hear previously scheduled Family Bell announcements.
- Alternative: Google recommends using Routines as an alternative, though it lacks the same functionality.
6️⃣ Daily Assistant Updates Like “Send Me the Weather Every Day”
- Automatic daily updates for weather and other routine information will be discontinued.
7️⃣ Google Assistant on Car Accessories (Bluetooth & AUX Devices) Shutting Down
- Google confirmed it is disabling Assistant for in-car microphones, which allowed users to interact with Google Assistant via Bluetooth car accessories.
🔍 What This Means for Users
While some of these feature removals are minor inconveniences, others—like Family Bell, Interpreter Mode, and in-car Assistant support—are significant losses for users who relied on them for daily tasks.
Google is redirecting users to its core apps like Google Photos, Google Translate, and Routines, but the loss of hands-free voice convenience is a step backward for the Assistant ecosystem.
🌍 The Bigger Picture: Google Assistant’s Future Under Gemini AI
Google is gradually phasing out Google Assistant in favor of Gemini AI, which is expected to replace Assistant on Android phones. The feature removals suggest that Google is refocusing its AI strategy and preparing for a more advanced AI-powered experience under Gemini.
While Gemini promises smarter and more conversational AI capabilities, it remains unclear whether it will restore some of the lost functionality from Google Assistant.
For now, longtime Google Assistant users may find these changes frustrating, especially those who heavily used Assistant’s smart home and voice-controlled functionalities.
