Dantewada, 2 September (Kiran News): In Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district, floods have caused severe damage to roads and bridges, with 23 bridges reported broken across the region. As a result, students of Korkoti Primary and Middle School in the Barsur area are being forced to risk their lives to reach school.

According to local residents, children from Reka village studying in Korkoti School previously walked two kilometres daily, crossing the bridge on the Barsur-Chitrakot road. However, after one end of the bridge was washed away in the floods, regular movement has been completely disrupted. Now, villagers have made makeshift arrangements using wooden planks and old electric wires to help people cross. More than 20 children from Reka village are using this broken bridge to go to school.
Students, including Aswanti (Class 6), Lachhani, Santoshi (Class 7), Samli (Class 2), Dashmi (Class 3), Shivanti, Suraj, and Channa, said that although the water level has receded, they are still afraid to cross the stream in this manner. Despite the danger, they continue to attend school so that their studies are not disrupted. A single misstep could cause them to fall into a 20-foot-deep stream.
To support the children, villagers have set up wooden planks and tied a damaged electric wire across the stream, which the children hold on to while crossing. Meanwhile, the education department has not issued any directions regarding closure of schools in the affected villages.
