Ebola Cases Rise to 635 in DR Congo, 30 Patients Recover

Kinsasha, June 11: The number of Ebola virus cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has surged to 635, as reported by Health Minister Roger Kamba.

In a statement on the social media platform X, Kamba noted that the outbreak, which originated in Bundibugyo, remains a significant challenge. However, the number of recoveries is increasing, and monitoring of individuals who have come into contact with infected persons is improving.

According to the health minister, the percentage of monitored contacts has risen to 61.1%, up from 56.4% the previous day. He emphasized that the health department is keeping a close watch on every area and potential case.

Kamba also mentioned that eight new patients have recovered, including seven from Nyankunde and one from the Mongbwalu area, bringing the total number of recoveries to 30. He urged the public, stating, “The recovery of each patient sends a message that timely treatment can save lives.”

To date, the government has dispatched 490 tons of medication to the affected regions. Additionally, laboratories have been strengthened, and health teams are continuously working in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces.

The DR Congo officially declared this Ebola outbreak on May 15. Just two days later, on May 17, the World Health Organization declared it a public health emergency of international concern.

Meanwhile, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned of significant challenges in relief and rescue operations. Many health centers are facing shortages of clean water, protective equipment, medications, and essential resources.

The organization also highlighted that insecurity in certain areas, a lack of ambulances, poor road conditions, and delays in salary payments to health workers are hampering relief efforts. Additionally, diminishing public trust in the health system poses a major challenge.

The Africa CDC has emphasized the need to raise community awareness, rapidly deploy medical teams to at-risk areas, strengthen infection prevention measures, and enhance monitoring of contacts with infected individuals.
