Damascus, July 3: A devastating explosion in a cafe in the Syrian capital, Damascus, has resulted in the deaths of nine people, with 20 others injured. The Syrian Ministry of Interior reported the incident that occurred last night in a cafe located in central Damascus.
According to officials, the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) weighing approximately one kilogram, filled with metal fragments. The explosion took place at around 3 PM local time.
The Xinhua news agency, citing officials, stated that the device detonated inside a cafe on Al-Nasr Street in the Hijaz area, approximately 70 meters west of the Justice Palace.
Immediately following the explosion, security forces and emergency teams were activated. Efforts were initiated to provide prompt medical assistance to the injured. Authorities also announced that an investigation has begun to determine the circumstances of the blast and identify those responsible.
Earlier, on Thursday, the Syrian state news agency SANA reported that all injured individuals had been transported to hospitals.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack; however, security officials suggest that the Islamic State may be attempting to exploit security vulnerabilities. Following the ousting of President Assad, the new government is striving to consolidate control over Syria, while the Islamic State is reportedly reactivating its sleeper cells, recruiting new fighters, and relocating weapons.
In June, SANA reported that unidentified assailants had killed two Syrian soldiers in the Aleppo province. According to a source in the Defense Ministry, the soldiers were targeted near the city of Manbij in the northeastern rural area of Aleppo.
This incident marks the latest in a series of attacks targeting military personnel under Syria’s new interim administration. Previously, on May 11, two soldiers were killed during an attack on a bus in the rural area of Hasakah province in northeastern Syria.
Some media reports suggest that the Islamic State may be involved in recent attacks on members of the Syrian military, which was established following the collapse of the previous Syrian administration at the end of 2024.
