Aimy Wissa, an aerospace engineer at Princeton University, explained that these flaps work passively, responding naturally to airflow dynamics without relying on mechanical controls. Arranged in multiple rows across the wing, they stabilise airflow, preventing high-pressure air from disrupting lift generation. This innovative approach mimics how birds maintain steady flight, even in turbulent conditions.

“The key advantage is that these flaps engage automatically at critical moments, ensuring optimal lift without manual intervention,” Wissa stated. This passive response to aerodynamic forces makes the design highly efficient, reducing pilot workload during complex flight scenarios.
